Monika works in the vegetable market and Harry works next door. He takes her to the movies and soon they are going steady. Wanting to escape the mundane frustrations of their lives the two decide to leave the town and take Harry`s small boat to a nearby island. At first things are idyllic: sun bathing in the nude drinking going to dances. But Monika becomes pregnant. They run out of food and start stealing from summer cottages. Monika is caught and only just escapes and finally they have to return to town. Harrys aunt sees to it that they get properly married. They have a daughter but Monika is soon bored with married life and no money and lets Harry take care of the baby. He goes on a business trip returning a day earlier than expected to find Monika in bed with another man. They separate. Monika takes off and Harry is left with his little daughter and the memories of one summer of happiness.
